Lemonopoly is a real-world lemon sharing game for the Bay Area. Bay Area cities are competing against each other to see who can share the most lemons. San Francisco alone has at least 4,000 lemon trees.

To play Lemonopoly, players complete lemony challenges in the categories of Agriculture, Trade and Lemoncraft. These challenges range from really easy, delicious and kid-friendly, to more challenging — requiring collaboration with your neighbors. You will get to learn, eat, grow things and make friends!

The goal of this slow game is to become Lemon Independent, and build up our local lemon economies. The winning city gets the title of “The Big Lemon,” and bragging rights. Right now, the cities of San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley are all competing against each other. Team #SFO will represent at Come Out and Play, where we will set up our lemonAID stand, do some special lemony games. (And hopefully we will boost San Francisco out of last place!)

You can start playing right now: Find a few local lemons from San Francisco to bring to share. We need a lot of lemons for the game! If you like, you can tweet photos of your lemons: @lemonopoly #sfo

Commissioned by ZERO1 with support from the James Irvine Foundation and presented in collaboration with SOMArts Cultural Center and the Come Out & Play Festival.

OBJECT OF THE GAME:
To follow your roles path to the end, checking in with all Kachinas along the way. If a coyote spirit catches you, you must answer a tricky question. How you answer this question will either add or subtract from your overall accomplishments. Win the game by getting pins from all locations both physical and virtual.

WHAT YOU NEED:
This game can be played without technology, but there are clues, incentives and awards if you play using the ARIS app on an iPad or iPhone.

Kachina’s are at each site and will ask a riddle to the curious car, balloon and roadrunner. If they answer the question correctly you will award them with a pin.

PLAYERS:

Each person is randomly chosen to be a roadrunner, auto or balloon. Players follow a path through the city, checking in with Kachinas along the way. The Coyote spirit who can help or hinder them on their journey may also chase you.

GAME
The game Montañas to Mesa uses a game structure similar to tag and scavenger hunt along with a geo-locative mobile app while players assume the character of an auto, balloon and roadrunner. These three must compete with each other to reach their destinations as each has an advantage and disadvantage over the other.

Using familiar geo locative systems with smart phones they players will be given clues and tips tied to a fact about their mode of mobility and the history of urban development of Albuquerque. These clues are set up like a scavenger hunt where in order to reach their destination they must collect, contribute or take action using the information they receive from the mobile communication system.

In Sixteen Tons, four players face off in a strategy game that uses heavy sections of steel pipe as the game pieces. At the beginning of the game, players take out three dollar bills from their wallets. This money is used to bribe other players, so that they move your pieces for you. The resulting play combines strategic with social thinking. The strategy element is simple to solve – but the social play of Sixteen Tons is impossible to predict.

By the end of the game, one of the players has won – but invariably, the winner has spent all of his or her money to achieve victory. Does everyone keep the dollars they have? Is the money redistributed equally? Or does the winner take all? Intentional ambiguity in the rules forces players to deicide what to do with the cash at the end of the game.

Sixteen Tons was commissioned by the Art History of Games conference in Atlanta in February 2010. Since then it has been exhibited at Indiecade in Los Angeles (where it won the Developers Choice award) and at the NYU Game Center’s No Quarter exhibition. A tabletop version of the game was presented at the 2011 F.R.O.G. conference in Vienna.
